Howard 4, Labor 0

Howard wins historic fourth term

Prime Minister John Howard is set to become the second longest serving Prime Minister after the Coalition's convincing win in yesterday's federal election.

The Coalition won the election with a swing of around 3.5 per cent on the primary vote, picking up eight seats from Labor in Tasmania, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.

Full Story.

Latham was gracious in defeat, showing that our democracy isn't as wounded as ultra-leftists would have you believe.

Seats which changed hands:

Bass, Bonner, Braddon, Greenway, Hasluck, Stirling, Swan, Wakefield went Liberal.

Adelaide, Cunningham, Hindmarsh, Parramatta, Richmond went Labor.

Winners: Liberals, Nationals, Greens and Family First all increased their primary vote.

Losers: Labor can't get their primary vote above the moribund 38%. Until it does, it won't win federally

What will happen next is up to Howard, but I can sense that he will hang around until he overtakes Hawke, and then hand the reigns over to Costello.

Big Losers: Democrats and One Nation are now extinct.

Notably, ACT was the only state/territory not to swing towards the Government, confirming my belief that it has bugger all effect on federal elections.
